“There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment,” wrote the 17th-century cleric and memoirist Cardinal de Retz, “and the masterpiece of good ruling is to know and seize this moment.”

This assignment lends itself to street photography, but can you do it for landscapes eg that split second when a ray of light shines through stormy clouds?
A butterflies wings beating? or a mirror image of 2 butterflies landing at the same time? do these count?

The same view of a stream, but at different moments – a short exposure and a long exposure

Eg of Street Photography
a typical view of Abergavenny market.

(I would also like to try to transform this shot into a miniature).
that moment when something is bought and money is handed over

Photographers who have tried to use a ‘decisive moment’ without using people in the image

My Ideas for this assignment –
1 – The decisive moment using bird (ducks) photography – diving, landing, taking off. I like the subjects in my photography to look like they are doing something, not just sitting there doing nothing, so how can I achieve this?

2 – There’s a tree on the mountain/quarry where I live and everytime I look at it the lighting is different, could this be used as a decisive moment and use this topic to explore the lighting at different days/times etc?

3 – Street Photography. I’ve been visiting my dad in hospital and parking in the multi-storey car park and noticed the entrance to the car park is a natural framework. People/cars going past it are constantly different, could this be used as a decisive moment? – could I use this as a try at timelapse photography?

Really liking the multi-storey car park idea…
I also want to move away from the standard decisive moment brief and using the frame work of the car park entrance want to use these seconds that people walk past it as a ‘moment in time’.
Contact Sheet of 1st shoot to Multi-storey car park

The shoot was quite successful and I’ve ordered some test prints off Photobox to compare sizes/quality etc cos they are cheap. But will order my final shots from a pro printer. The shoot has also given me some more ideas such as long exposure, multiple images, movement, different weather – think of umbrellas in the image as something different?
Received the prints from the printers and they are quite good. I think it has given me another idea to present it to my tutor. I want to take a sliver from each photograph and put it into one photo like a large montage of images.
The following pic is a set of images Ive printed and cut up, please ignore quality as I have taken a pic of the finished idea with my surface pro and the quality is not the best, but it gives you an idea of what I am trying to achieve here:

I’ve had another set of prints from the printers, but the quality isnt there for some reason, maybe they are blown up too large, so will resize and reorder.
Failed to do what I wanted to in PS, so going to rethink this assignment and how to display it.
Ive seen hand made crafted books called ‘concentina’ books so have made one of those to display my images. As we are confined to A4 size, this has been quite difficult to produce something respectable and presentable and Im still not convinced I have achieved this.
Looking at the work of Sabine Weiss –

Sabine has used frames of entrances to the subway and shop windows to frame her subject and used black and white photographs for street photography. Her framing is precise.

Rethink: I’m not sure this idea is working as well as I had thought it would and would like to develop it further. I am wondering if I can find some other types of ‘frameworks’ to include for this decisive moment assignment. I still like the idea of people choosing to walk past openings at that particular time and only having seconds to shoot it eg for instance this lady walking past a road leading to the shops and for eg these ladies walking past a brightly painted shop front.
Think another shoot in Blackwood to have a look round is on the cards. Best to choose a busy day like a Friday or Saturday when the market is there. Also in the meantime I need to catch up on some of my exercises.
Ive really struggled with this assignment, not so much with ideas, in fact there have been too many ideas for me to concentrate on the ‘decisive moment’ brief. Ive decided to go with the saying ‘A brief moment in time…; as this suits the photographs i have taken at the horse show.
Ive had prints done of the day and decided to get a book printed of the final shots and use poetry and quotes about horses to finish off the look of the assignment. The finished product is a tactile thing and nicer to look through then just sending my tutor 8 x A4 prints. Im really pleased with the outcome after the struggle of finishing this assignment.
